For years teachers and methodologists have complained about bilingual dictionaries among their perceived weaknesses are the fact that the information they give is often misleading, that they give few, if any, examples and that they ignore collocational language combinations. In particular they have often been shown to be especially unreliable for students who wish to produce their own English with new or only partly-known words, by looking for English equivalents for words in their own language. Despite these weaknesses, the problem for teachers has been that students, quite naturally, like bilingual dictionaries and insist on using them. What is needed, therefore is a new approach to their design which will avoid all the pitfalls that have been identified, and, instead, not only help students to understand what English words mean, but also (and this is the crucial point) allow them to find the right English word for a word in their language and then use that English word appropriately, with confidence.
